For about thirty seconds, the man in front of Cary looked like an ordinary human man in a business suit. She frowned a little, remembering the Fae in Tatianaâs court whoâd been dressed in a human business suit and how heâd looked so out of place. Was this the same man? The same Fae?
But before she could study him, the man smiled, showing a lot of teeth that didnât typically belong in a human mouth. And then he changed.
Growing taller and wider until the business suit shredded.
In place of the unassuming business man stood someone as tall as Deacon, as wide as a grizzly bear, and sporting leather armor studded with plates of silver and gold, twisted and braided in ways that made the metal sparkle like jewelry in the dying sunlight. He was the biggest, thickest, meanest looking highborn faery Cary had ever seen.
He was flanked by three equally large and mean looking Fae. And two of the hobgoblin whoâd chased Borir into her realm.
They were all wearing the same thick leather armor, covered in silver and gold links. Silver and gold werenât strong enough to serve as much protection, but Cary had a feeling there was magic in that chainmail that belied the soft metals used to make it.
âNice transformation trick,â she said, nodding at the former businessman. âMust have practiced a long time to get that down so well.â She waved at the two hobgoblins. âHey.â
The former businessman-turned giant faery wasnât holding any weapons. But the faeries and hobgoblins flanking him were all armed with long swords, the blades glimmering with a bright purple light, glowing from within. The hilts were wrapped in leather, a thin wire of gold twisting over the top, and the guards were made of the same glowing metal as the blade.
Because of the Faeâs allergy to iron, Cary was certain those swords werenât made of steel. But that magic glow proved whatever the hell they were made of, it probably wasnât weak.
âWell, this is fun,â Cary murmured. âAnd you would be?â
The man flicked a glance at Cary, then summarily dismissed her and focused his full attention on Jaxer and Eriana.
Rude.
âEriana,â the man said, âby order of Queen Tatiana, you are being placed under arrest for conspiracy to overthrow the crown.â
âGrim, you bastard,â she hissed. âYou think you can have me charged with your crimes? The queen will hear the truth!â
âNot if youâve been killed resisting our efforts to bring you in.â
âYeah, Iâm not sure which of you is the bad guy here,â Cary said. âAlthough, Iâm thinking the guy named âGrimââGrim? Really?âis likely not in the good guy category. But at any rate, Iâm not letting anyone kill anyone just yet.â
Grim ignored her. âTake her,â he ordered his soldiers.
The hair on Caryâs neck tingled, but she didnât glance behind her to see what the others were doing. She faced down the very large soldiers charging toward her, waiting patiently. When they slammed against her shield and were tossed backward onto their collective butts, she nodded.
